WHAT TO EXPECT
We have all experienced the uncertainty of visiting a church for the first time. While we’ve tried to answer some of the most common questions here, please remember, there is no better way to get to know us than to actually join us on a Sunday morning!
WHEN IS WORSHIP?
Worship services are held every Sunday at 10:00am. We suggest you arrive about 10 minutes early to give you time to park and find a seat.
WHERE ARE YOU LOCATED?
Our address is 1980 Hamilton Avenue in San Jose, at the corner of Leigh Avenue.
WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?
Wear whatever feels right for you. You’ll notice that on any given Sunday some people dress a little more formally while others prefer much more casual clothing.
HOW LONG DOES WORSHIP LAST?
Usually about an hour, followed by a coffee hour in Fellowship Hall where everyone is welcome!
WHAT KIND OF SERVICE CAN I EXPECT?
A traditional but not overly formal mixture of scripture, preaching, music, and prayer. Communion is offered to all on the first Sunday of the month, and our youth assist in worship the first Sunday as well, taking on roles such as ushering, serving communion, and reading the scripture. Before entering the sanctuary, our ushers will give you a bulletin for that week’s order of service which includes prayers, hymns, announcements, and an upcoming calendar of events.
ARE CHILDREN INCLUDED?
Yes! Children are an important part of First Congregational Church. Every Sunday, there is a children’s sermon that takes place about 10 or 15 minutes into the service. At that time, children are invited to sit up at the front of the church for a brief message, and at the end of the message, they are invited to go follow their teachers to Sunday school. You are also welcome to accompany your child if that makes your child feel more comfortable.
IS THERE CHILDCARE?
Childcare is available for babies through preschool-age children. Parents of babies will receive a pager so they can feel reassured that they’ll be alerted if their child needs them.
CAN I TAKE COMMUNION?
We believe in an open table, where all are welcome to take communion. We offer communion on the first Sunday of the month, and our partner congregation, the United Disciples Fellowship, offers communion after church every Sunday at the front of the Sanctuary.
