“Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy.” Proverbs 31:8-9
The Open Table: Feeding the community. Feeding the future.
The community of First Congregational Church of San Jose has embarked on a new and exciting part of our sacred journey. We are being led by the Spirit, by our passions, gifts, and skills, to imagine a world without hunger. The Open Table, our new mission focus, is bringing together creative ideas and resources and personal and community energy to these issues in our neighborhoods and in our world. We are creating opportunities for advocacy on national policy matters, for education around climate change and agriculture, for hands-on mission work in our city, for partnerships with state and local organizations, and even for relevant work here on the church campus.
At the Bill Wilson Center for Homeless Youth, we prepare and serve a hot lunch on the 4th Wednesday of each month, and will also host Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners for the youth.
The second Wednesday of each month, our congregation helps distribute food to needy families through Second Harvest at the Campbell Methodist Church.
At the Village House we support medically fragile homeless women by helping staff both Day Centers and Night Centers as the program rotates from church to church.
Silicon Valley Safe Parking at FCCSJ: We host people who live in their cars. They spend the night in our back parking lot, and volunteers staff a hospitality room each evening and morning for a couple of hours. Contact Karen Armor to find out more.
Rebuilding Together Silicon Valley: Twice each year we work as a team to rehabilitate a home for a disabled or low income family to allow them to remain safely in their homes. Come join us, lend a hand, bring your ideas, and your work gloves.
