Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.
PRELUDE: In Christ Alone
Carol Tornquist, arr.
Alfred’s Sacred Performer Series, 2002
This world and its life is sacred;
the very flesh of the Holy One.
She birthed it, breathed her own life into it
set in motion the evolution of its life.
Who now can stand before Her?
Those with open hearts
who love the truth and care for the world
They will be blessed.
Fling open the doors of your heart!
Open your being to God
You will know joy and peace.
Christine Robinson: Psalms for a New World
Living God, even as we gather for worship we sometimes suspect that the world is too broken. The world is too unfair. We see injustice and feel helpless to bring about change. We find goodness for a while, but then it is taken away. We sink down into despair and helplessness. Across the miles and the pandemic that separate us, bind us together, and remind us that we need one another. We are the body of Christ in this world. We are not alone. Your Spirit lives in and through us. Help us as we gather to find strength in one another for the journey of faith. Amen.

SCRIPTURE: Matthew 6:16-24 Karen Armor
“And whenever you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces so as to show others that they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that your fasting may be seen not by others but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal; but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. “The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light; but if your eye is unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness! “No one can serve two masters; for a slave will either hate the one and love the other, or be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.
PRAYER MUSIC: Rock of Ages
Melody Barber, arr.
Alfred’s Sacred Performer Series, 2017
Today we honor and make sacred the small acts of self-care that we practice. We bless the time we take for healing and renewal. Together in a deep spirit of love, we acknowledge the sacred nature of our regenerative actions. May we engage in prayer for healing and for wholeness, for the whole sacred world.
Let us pray together:
May I come to see the sacred nature of each act of self-care that I practice. The grace that connects me to calm, to renewal, to hope, and the restoration of balance as I encounter the world around me. Let all my self-care be a blessing.
