Important COVID-19 Update

WORSHIP: The leadership of FCCSJ has decided to return to virtual worship only for at least the next three Sundays (January 2, 9, and 16). While we are sad not to be able to gather in person, we also know that this is the best decision we can make for the safety of our staff and community. The only people in the Sanctuary on Sunday mornings will be those in front of the camera (ministers, reader), instrumental musicians, and the AV team.

MEETINGS, ADULT LEARNING, SUNDAY SCHOOL: All church groups that can meet over Zoom should do so. The only church meetings happening on campus will be those that require physical presence (for example, if a meeting with consultants related to the Sanctuary Renewal Project requires being on site). Leaders of all boards and committees should contact Cindy immediately to reserve a slot on the Zoom calendar.

CHOIR PRACTICE: Cancelled until further notice.

HOW LONG? This decision only covers the next 3 weeks. We will continue to review new information as it becomes available and expect to return to in-person worship and meetings as the surge eases.

WHY? The data are clear that the Omicron surge in California is far from over. What isn’t clear is how bad it will get and how quickly it will resolve. As our case rates have closely followed New York’s in past surges, health experts anticipate that our numbers will continue to rise well above the peak of Delta infections before they begin to drop. The surge is having a very real impact on healthcare systems throughout the nation and is a continued risk to our community due to break-through infections. As you know, the initial halt to in-person worship came suddenly when a member of the church’s leadership team received a positive diagnosis two hours before our Christmas Eve service. (That person is getting steadily better and remains isolated.) Currently, per the CDC, our County is at “High” risk of transmission and, while the booster provides better protection against the virus, less than 50% of Santa Clara County’s 18+ population have received that booster.

WHAT CAN I DO?

  • Wear a high quality mask. N95 or KN95 masks are best for avoiding Omicron. If you do not have access to those, consider combining a blue surgical mask with a cloth mask, making certain that they fit snuggly around your face.
  • Get your booster shot as soon as you are eligible.
  • Avoid crowded events and locations. Shop at non-peak periods or use delivery services.
  • Stay home if you are not feeling well.
