“Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy.” Proverbs 31:8-9
The Open Table: Feeding the community. Feeding the future.
The community of First Congregational Church of San Jose has embarked on a new and exciting part of our sacred journey. We are being led by the Spirit, by our passions, gifts, and skills, to imagine a world without hunger. The Open Table, our new mission focus, is bringing together creative ideas and resources and personal and community energy to these issues in our neighborhoods and in our world. We are creating opportunities for advocacy on national policy matters, for education around climate change and agriculture, for hands-on mission work in our city, for partnerships with state and local organizations, and even for relevant work here on the church campus.
We are doing hands-on work locally, providing hot lunch to homeless youth monthly at the Bill Wilson Center and joining with Valley Verde to build vegetable gardens at the Elmwood Correctional Facility. Our youth will be traveling to Washington State this summer to learn about sustainable farming. If your passion lies in environmental work, help us organize a major Environmental Sustainability Summit, scheduled for June 23-25, 2017.
Meanwhile, we continue to be involved in other key outreach projects, including Rebuilding Together Silicon Valley. Twice each year we work as a team to rehabilitate a home for a disabled or low income family to allow them to remain safely in their homes.
Come join us, lend a hand, bring your ideas, and your work gloves.
