Whether you are a believer, a seeker, a person of faith, or one who has no faith at all, you are welcome here.
First Congregational Church of San Jose, where children are welcome!

Children are a priority at First Congregational Church of San Jose. We honor the children among us as a valuable part of our faith community, and design our educational programs to tap into their natural creativity and spirituality. Our Christian Education commitment is to create opportunities for our children’s faith development and understanding of God as Love, and Love as God.

Church School

Children stay in the Sanctuary through the children’s moment, and then head out to Sunday school until 11:15 a.m. (Children 3rd grade or older will be released to fellowship time at 11:15 a.m. Younger children must be picked up by a guardian.)

We have two church school classes in addition to nursery care for children under 2 years old. Our 3–6-year-old class is geared to those kids who are in preschool and kindergarten while our 1st–5th grade class is for the older kids who are more accustomed to a school environment. We use a curriculum called Godly Play in both our classes. Godly Play is based on the principles of Montessori Education and will give our children a very engaging and open way to interact with the scriptures. Godly Play offers a combination of storytelling, interactive discussion, and individual expression time.

If you would like to know more about Godly Play or be a part of our teaching team, please contact Marlie Heberling, Interim Director of Children’s Ministries.

All children 5th grade and younger are invited to join us for Heart 2 Heart, our monthly evening of games, songs, and crafts. Dinner is provided each month.

Please join us on the 3rd Friday of each month (September through May) from 6:30-9:00 p.m. K-5th grade: $10, preschool and younger: $5
